If an adult driver age 21 or older receives 12 points in 12 months or 18 points in 24 months, DMV will move to suspend her license. She is entitled to a hearing to determine how long the suspension will be. These suspensions can range from as little as a few weeks or months up to one (1) year. Sometimes a driver will be given credit for what she has already served under an active restraint, or possibly even time a driver has stopped driving as a result of a perceived suspension based upon erroneous information.

Minor drivers age 18-21 have fewer points to work with and may be suspended on the accumulation of 9 points in 12 months or 12 points in 24 months. An additional life of license suspension applies for 14 offenses occurring after age 18. There is no life of license period for adult drivers age 21 and over.

A minor under 18 years of age may be suspended by accumulating 6 points in 12 months or 7 points in 24 months with a life of license suspension for 7 offenses before age 18.

A chauffeur who accumulates 16 points in 12 months or 24 points in 24 months or 28 points in 48 months will be suspended if the tickets were received while on the job driving as a chauffeur.

All violations are based upon date of violation rather than date of conviction.
